United States of America: Master's in International Humanitarian Action (MIHA)

The Institute of International Humanitarian Affairs (IIHA) and the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences (GSAS) at Fordham University have joined together to offer a comprehensive Master’s program that combines the experience of long-time humanitarian professionals with the academic strength of Fordham faculty. The Master's in International Humanitarian Action consists of Four Modules, 8 credits each, which together total 32 credits. Courses are offered in one and four week intensive sessions in various locations around the world, including Barcelona, Geneva, Goa, Nairobi, Dublin, Rome, Penang and New York. Students can complete the program in as little as 18 months or as long as five years, depending on individual schedules and resources.

The MIHA Difference:

  • Conduct independent research using appropriate methodology on a current challenge or thematic specialization within the field of humanitarian response
  • Analyze data regarding trends within disaster and crisis management in order to formulate recommendations for best practices in humanitarian interventions
  • Demonstrate a deep understanding of how their chosen specialization can inform strategic initiatives to improve the analysis, response, and delivery of humanitarian assistance

Program Overview:

Module 1: International Diploma in Humanitarian Assistance (IDHA)

  • Articulate a nuanced understanding of the concept of humanitarian crises
  • Identify the roles and interactions among key actors in humanitarian response
  • Evaluate interventions and identify examples of good practice
  • Understand the dynamics of working effectively as part of a team in a high stress environment

Module 2: International Diploma in Operational Humanitarian Assistance (IDOHA)

  • Distinguish phases and opportunities for humanitarian intervention
  • Understand the practical implementation of humanitarian response, including effective methods to address security and access challenges
  • Identify strategies to build capacity and mobilize local response to crises

Module 3: International Diploma in the Management of Humanitarian Action (IDMHA)

  • Recognize the different dimensions of accountability in humanitarian response
  • Demonstrate an understanding of effective management skills
  • Assess the potential ethical issues that arise in humanitarian action

Module 4: International Diploma in Humanitarian Leadership (IDHL)

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the history of humanitarian affairs and the strategic initiatives needed to improve the analysis, mitigation, response, and delivery of humanitarian assistance
